Grandma: “There’s a date on it, 1913. You know, I think this is an old spelling bee medal.”
Wanda: “Awesome! Do you think it’s real gold?”
Grandma: “Probably not, but I’m sure it felt like real gold to the child who won it. Spelling bees were big events. Let’s take this out to the Tallahassee Museum and see if someone can tell us more about it. 1913 is way before my time, but I remember spelling bees at my school.”
Ace: “Really? I thought they were a new trick to get us to learn spelling.”
Grandma: “They’ve been using that trick for a long time, Ace, it’s called competition.”
