11. Ace: “Wanda, look, fusees! Mr. Jip, are these round things called torpedoes? How do they work?”
12. Jip: “If our train broke down on the track, my job as flagman was to signal any train behind us that it needed to stop. So I’d strap a torpedo on each side of the track, way back behind our train, and when the next train’s engine rolled over them they’d make a loud popping sound. That signal told the engineer to put on his brakes.”
